What the Networks Did Not Tell You About Last Week’s Inauguration

On Thursday, I attended the Texas-hosted Trump Inaugural Ball (called “Black Tie & Boots”) featuring popular musical acts such as Clay Walker, Kevin Fowler, The Beach Boys, Tanya Tucker and the Gatlin Brothers.  So much for the mantra many of the media kept repeating that no name entertainers were participating.

Gold is Up in 2017

So far in 2017, gold is up 3.8% vs. only 0.6% in the Dow Jones index, but the New Year is still young.  Gold reached $1,200 last Thursday for the first time since November 22, 2016.

Gold Will Likely Rise in 2017

As we close 2016, gold will likely rise for the full year, but stock indices will likely beat gold in 2016 for the fourth straight year.  From 2001 to 2012, gold beat stocks each year. Then, stocks beat gold for the last three full years.

Outlook for Gold in 2017

Just like last year, the Fed has promised several more interest rate increases in the coming year, and that prospect has pushed gold prices down.  But what if 2017 is a repeat of 2016, with the Fed backing away from its promises once again.  Gold could stage another first-half rally, as it did in 2016.

Trump’s Election Boosted the Sales of Many High-Priced Coins

While gold bullion has declined since the November election, demand for extremely rare coins has risen.  There’s a growing sense of optimism among entrepreneurs and collectors I talk with that business and income will generally improve during Trump’s presidency.  This seems to be manifesting itself in a surge of high-end numismatic sales that is atypical for December.

Silver Beats Gold (and Stocks) in 2016

Italy staged a vote similar to Brexit on Sunday, in which Italian voters rejected a call to make the Prime Minister more powerful.  This is one of a series of important votes in Europe pointing toward the eventual weakening or dissolution of the European Union (EU).  In time this will hurt the euro.  As a result, some major European banks have upped their price projections of silver for 2017.

Some Major Financial Firms See $1,440 to $1,550 Gold in 2017

Britain’s HSBC bank is projecting gold at $1,550 per ounce by the end of 2017. Trump’s protectionist stance in the campaign, if he follows through with it while in the White House, could trigger trade wars that will destabilize global markets, which would boost gold prices.

The Public Debt Problem is Not Yet Solved!

Barring a miracle, huge federal debts will continue under the new President and Congress, pushing gold prices back up in time.  The weekend Barron’s published a cover article, “Saving American, Part 1,” which begins, “The U.S. is headed for a major financial crisis if it does not restrain the growth of its debt burden.”
