Fitch Ratings Downgrades U.S. Treasury Debt
Gold is lower on Monday, August 7, mostly on expectations of slightly lower Consumer and Producer Price inflation report to be released on Thursday and Friday – but inflation is a relatively small consideration in light of last week’s debt downgrade of U.S. Treasury securities by Fitch, a major credit rating agency.

Gold has now risen $50 (and silver +$2) in July. Gold jumped $20 in one day last week based on the slow growth in June Consumer Prices, implying a likely “pause” by the Federal Reserve in their next interest rate policy meeting on July 25-26.

Jerome Powell was appointed Chairman of the Federal Reserve by President Trump in November 2017, and he took control of our central bank in February 2018. Powell’s first major mistake in December of that year was to raise interest rates one time too many, causing a huge stock market crash in the Christmas season for no good or explainable reason.
