I was a SSGT on duty at a site in Sinop, Turkey overlooking the Black Sea. I was performing Sergeant of The Guard and was in the MP hut. One of our duties was to go to the Operations Building and read the iing messages to determine if any warranted the notification of the Sitemander. Before I could make the trip to Operations I received a call to proceed there immediately, that there was something I needed to see. When I arrived at Operations I went immediately to the Center and was shown a message that announced that President Kennedy was shot. I immediately informed the Sergeant Major. Collectively, we didn't know how serious the situation was. We went on alert and proceeded to take up arms in case we were attacked from across the Black Sea or by air. Thankfully neither happened.
