The United Kingdom and the United States have long shared a special relationship’, a term coined by Sir Winston Churchill in 1946 that endures today. The Royal Mint and the United States Mint have joined to form a groundbreaking numismatic partnership, uniting the skills of each mint’s Chief Engraver to produce a coin that unifies both Britannia and Liberty. The symbols have featured on coinage produced by each respective mint but never together on a single coin. Introduced by the Romans, Britannia has served as the female personification of Britain for centuries, first appearing on the coinage
of Emperor Hadrian in AD 119. Rejuvenated in the Elizabethan era and associated with Britain’s maritime strength, the figure has featured regularly on British coinage since the reign of Charles II. The American principle of liberty, a value held dearly by the people of the US and one upon which the nation was built, has featured on United States coinage for over 150 years. Gordon Summers, Chief Engraver at The Royal Mint, and Joseph Menna, Chief Engraver at the United States Mint, have created a design that celebrates the icons in harmony, giving each equal prominence on the reverse of a coin. Struck in gold and silver, the coin is available in a variety of sizes and editions.
