The $3 Indian Princess Comes Of Age

The birth of the $3 Indian Princess gold coin has its roots in the Congressional Act of 1845, which established a three-cent piece for the purpose of facilitating the purchase U.S. Postal stamps. Eight years later, Congress enacted the Mail Act of February 21, 1853, which carried the logic of the 1845 Act further by creating a $3 gold coin thinking thatit would encourage people to buy stamps in sheets of one hundred.

While the idea never really caught on, the resulting $3 Indian Princess gold coin has since become one of the favored numismatic coins among collectors everywhere. In fact, because of the relative rarity of surviving coins in mint state condition, they are considered to be one of the key "stopper" coins to completing a collection of all United States gold coins.
